Flying Horses

Back when Jamie was a little girl of about five years, she came running into the house after being outside with her Dad. She emphatically declared that she hated flying horses. Not understanding what she meant, I asked if she was referring to the mythical unicorn. "No! I mean flying horses! They're mean and they bite... hard!". After thinking about this, I realized Jamie was talking about horse flies. And yes, they are mean and bite hard. For the longest time, Jamie called horse flies flying horses and dragon flies were flying dragons. Hmmmm... not so far fetched. After all, flying ants are aptly called flying ants. Not ant flies. Whatever.

Walking around the pond in Madison Park today, Darlene and I spotted several dragon flies of various colors and size. They enjoy hanging around the waters edge and typically move too fast to photograph. With today's temps in the 90s, creatures big and small moved slower in the midday heat. Dragon flies lighted on sturdy twigs long enough for us to photograph. They made me think of Jamie. Someday she will fondly recall something silly her boys once said. And it will transport her back in time and make her smile. In the meantime, I watched as flying dragons flitted lazily in the summer sun.

The blue one is really cool.....reminds me of somebody I met in a bar once. Bar fly I think. Or barfly (not an adverb by the way).

OK, obviously my medication is kicking in. Sorry.

I love the flying dragons! They're absolutely beautiful. I think I had my own name for just about everything when I was young. I love that Ayden does the same thing.

Thanks to everyone for complimenting our new banner. As you bloggers already know, creating an original banner in blogger is not an easy task. Wanting a custom feel to our banner, it was Photoshop to the rescue. Chere, the font is Bickley Script. I use the same font to overlay Debra Rector Photography on my photos (also created in Photoshop). I colored the background of my template to match the banner. You can customize any of the template colors, fonts, and formatting easily. Don't you LOVE blogging? Kudos to Judy for her new blog. Pam is getting a start on hers. Check out Pam's Little Blog listed in my Favorite Links. Go Pam!

Debra, You were so lucky to have them slow down long enough to photograph. Also, the colors are wonderful. I do not think I have seen a red one before. Your story about Jamie reminded me of one with Dusty. He came in the house telling me there was a gizzard on the deck. I could not understand what he was talking about. After a close inspection, he was talking about a lizzard. When I would call them a lizzard. He would say that is what I said "gizzard".
